Course description

This course aims to

Equip students with binding skills with which they can advance to any level of bookbinding. Students are introduced to specialist tools, materials and techniques through the making of their own single and multi-section books. As the course progresses students design and make their own book structures. Students investigate experimental bindings and are encouraged to produce their own high-bread book forms from the techniques learned. The course explores traditional and creative bookbinding and inspires students to develop their own unique structures. On completion students will possess a library of skills to use, whether they bind a work document, create a unique sketchbook, photo album or experiment with books as an art form.

Who is this course is for?

Anyone who loves books and is curious to make them. No experience is necessary. Students with basic experience are also welcome to come and hone and refresh their skills.

What will I be able to do by the end of the course?

• Demonstrate a range of skills including cutting, folding, sewing and use of adhesives
• Demonstrate knowledge of materials and their properties
• Demonstrate knowledge of single and multi-section book forms
• Take home at least five finished books made using heavy paper and hard bookcloth covers
• Demonstrate knowledge of at least three experimental book forms including folded, sewn and composite structures

What materials will I need?

HB pencil, notebook, metal safety ruler, scalpel & blades or Kraft knife. You may bring special papers (if you have them already) as the course progresses but this is not essential.

Roughly how much will they cost?

Approximately £20 (for the above). Binding tools and basic materials are supplied but there is an additional charge of £1-2 per book (depending on size) for specialist materials.

How will I know I am making progress?

Your progress will be tangible. You will make or part-make (depending on complexity) a book each session. As your skills develop your bindings will visibly improve. You will have support, feedback and encouragement from the tutor and fellow students.

Is there any extra study outside the class?

No.

Who is the tutor?

Anna Deamer tutors bookbinding in London and Brighton. Her love of books and papers inspired her investigation into bookbinding, which began during her MA at Brighton University. She uses binding in her personal work as well as undertaking private commissions. Anna studied a BA in Fine Art at Wimbledon School of Art followed by a Postgraduate in Theatre Design and continues her professional practice alongside teaching painting, drawing and bookbinding. She undertakes one off art and design projects and also works with collages, schools and community groups.
Anna’s broad experience in the Arts informs her bookbinding and in turn, binding is a useful skill that influences her professional work. She finds that the making of one unique book is grounding and fulfilling for everyone who undertakes it.

What next?

Bookbinding Part 2: Experimental Bookbinding (follow on course).
Arthouse evening classes at the University of Brighton or alternative art courses at Friends Centre.
