Course description
This course aims to
You will use your own surroundings and the Brighton museums and galleries for research ideas. Take photos and sketch and come to class to develop your initial ideas. We will work boldly and explore different collaging techniques such as textiles/papers/paints/plastics/chalks/typeface to create beautiful and inspiring pieces of art. You will also be introduced to famous collage artists of the past and present, explore their techniques and try some out yourself!
Who is this course is for?
No previous experience necessary. All and everyone welcome.
What will I be able to do by the end of the course?
• Identify different collage artists and their techniques
• Experiment with different collage materials
• Work from a variety of starting points
• Worked on and completed at least one piece of collage
• Discuss your work with peers, inviting feedback
What materials will I need?
Any special or beautiful bits and pieces (papers, fabrics, wire etc…) at home or that you might source in shops that you think might work well with your ideas, beautiful collage doesn’t have to be expensive!
Roughly how much will they cost?
This depends upon you. Different works of collage require individual materials which you may like to buy or may be able to source from home or you might find that the basic materials the course provides fulfil your requirements.
How will I know I am making progress?
Working in collage demands an experimentative and brave way of working. You will find that you will break free of working and getting frustrated within your own boundaries. Exploring this exciting process will open up new ways of working creatively. The tutor will also give feedback throughout the course.
Is there any extra study outside the class?
Yes – there will be group trips to the Brighton and Hove galleries and museums to gain inspiration!
Who is the tutor?
Josephine is an experienced and qualified teacher working in Theatre and Fine Art. Her background is in Theatre and Film design. She currently teaches BA level Theatre Crafts as well as Adult Ed art classes. She designs and makes art and soft furnishings. She uses collage in her work and is always finding new materials and combinations of materials which excite and move her personal design work forward.
What next?
You could join another, different art course to further develop and extend your drawing and painting experiences within the Friends Centre or continue your personal development by returning to study on this course. Various art courses are also available at City College.
