This course aims to
• Reduce stress through self awareness and education
• Increase confidence in communication
• Encourage peer learning and support
Who is this course is for?

• Anyone who wants to understand more about what triggers stress
• Anyone who wants to learn relaxation and behaviour techniques to help manage their stress and feel more in control of their lives
What will I be able to do by the end of the course?
• Identify your stress triggers
• Prioritise your day to day tasks
• Name the areas of your life you need to change
• Use relaxation techniques to manage your anxieties and fears
• Use breathing techniques to manage your stress
• Use meditation and mindfulness strategies to calm your mind
• Practice safely, caring for your body and wellbeing
• Identify local contacts and resources for your next steps
What materials will I need?
If you have a yoga mat please bring this with you, though we can supply them if necessary. Loose clothing will be helpful as we will be doing some basic stretching and moving activities.

How will I know I am making progress?
We will do some simple questionnaires to monitor how we are feeling and thinking. We will also have regular check-ins and small group work to share how you are feeling and discuss any blocks which may be in the way of your progress.
Is there any extra study outside the class?
No.
Who is the tutor?
Elaine is a trainer, teacher and consultant in health and social care. This includes working with local communities and providing services to professionals in the voluntary and public sector. Her background is mental health and she particularly enjoys bringing this topic into the mainstream and sharing her skills and experience. She also works as a Sessional Lecturer at City College, Brighton on the Level 3 BTEC National Diploma in Health and Social Care course. In addition she has been practising bodywork for eleven years. She is a qualified shiatsu practitioner and has a private practice offering Thai massage, pregnancy Thai massage and Ayurvedic face massage. She also works from two complementary therapy clinics and is one of the founders of Sumana, the UK’s first low cost authentic Thai massage clinic, based in Brighton. She also teaches Thai massage at Sussex Downs College in Adult and Community Learning.
What next?
After this course students may want to attend courses to learn related stress management skills, e.g. yoga, reflexology, Thai massage, all of which are on offer at the Friends Centre at http://www.friendscentre.org.

During the course students may identify that the triggers to stress require more in-depth one to one support such as cognitive behavioural therapy, counselling and life coaching. At the Friends Centre we are committed to meeting the learning needs of all our students.
We would like to know if you have a disability or impairment such as partially sighted, deaf or hearing impaired, mobility problems or wheelchair user, a mental health difficulty such as depression or anxiety, or a medical condition such as epilepsy or ME. Closure of courses
All courses that do not reach minimum numbers will be closed. Before we close a course, providing numbers are reasonable, we discuss with the tutor, and students if the course has started, if there are any ways we could continue. These can include an increased fee, a shorter class time or running for fewer weeks.
Refunds
Refunds are made automatically if the Centre cancels a course. Partial refunds will be made if a course is cancelled before the end of term. Otherwise fees are not refunded, except in very exceptional personal circumstances. Requests for a refund should be made in writing to the Friends Centre. If your attendance is prevented by illness we will be sympathetic but a medical certificate will be required.
Kinsella Hardship Fund
We have a small fund available to help students who have a problem paying fees. Please apply in writing to the Friends Centre, in complete confidence, explaining the reasons for your application. We may be able to offer a reduction of up to half the reduced fee or allow you to pay in instalments over a longer period than usual.
