Course description
This course aims to
In five weeks we will have time to study two or three of the major plays and will choose from 'The Seagull', 'Uncle Vanya', 'The
Three Sisters' and 'The Cherry Orchard'. We will read one of the short farces, such as The Bear' and read and discuss two
short Stories, such as Gooseberries and The Lady with the Dog. The Russian background will be discussed, as well as the
importance of the relation between Stanislavski and the dramatist, and the importance of Chekhov (and Stanislavski) in the
revolutionary naturalist movement during the nineteenth century which continues into the twentieth.
The drama will be studied first in chronological order of writing. Recorded extracts will be played and/or read by the group as a
lead into discussion. Please read The Seagull for the introductory session which will also set the background. The class will be
involved in the choice of later material. Slide and video cassette material will also be used. The Penguin Classics contains
Ivanov as well as the other long plays plus The Bear and The Proposal. A selection of Chekhov's short stories is also
available in Penguin Classics.
What materials will I need?
Students are advised not to buy books until they attend their first session.
