Description

Come and learn the traditional art of stained glass to create your own unique items. Materials available from tutor at cost, dependent on project chosen. Please bring a fine permanent marker, pencil, ruler and a pair of scissors to each class.

What can students expect?

You will learn how to: cut glass cleanly and accurately; apply copperfoil; how to solder; how to design flat composition; different finishing ideas;
techniques for cutting a circle; introduce lead techniques specifically for windows.
Understand the health and safety requirements for each different stage of this craft.

Late starters allowed?

Yes, with the agreement of the tutor.

Literacy, Language and Numeracy skills required

You will need to be able to follow verbal and written instructions in English, in order to work safely in the classroom. You will also need to be able to measure length in centimetres and millimetres, draw basic shapes and follow technical explanations and instructions for practical work. The tutor will explain any specialist terms used.

Entry Requirements

This course is suitable for those with some experience, it is not suitable for beginners.

There is ongoing informal assessment throughout the course and the tutor will give you regular feedback on your progress.

No, this course is suitable for both beginners and those with some experience.

What is the progression route?

To other stained glass classes within BAEC and at other colleges, the tutor will advise.

Are there any extra costs?

Please bring a permanent marker, pencil, ruler and a pair of scissors to the first session. You will need to buy a glass cutter, tutor will advise. You will also to buy glass, copperfoil and solder, cost dependent on the project chosen. Tutor will advise at first session. The cost of materials is not included in the course fee.

Are there any set books?

No, but the tutor will advise on request.

Work set between sessions?

You may like to work at your project between sessions.

Equipment Required

Pencil, paper, container to transport glass home as there is no storage for student work. Please bring a fine permanent marker, pencil, ruler, pair of scissors and blu tack to each class. Tutor will advise of other requirements. Please wear old clothes or bring an overall. If you require glasses for close work, please bring them.

Teaching method/style?

A practical course with a mixture of demonstrations, small group work, 1 to 1 tutorials, discussion and question and answers.
