Experimenting with borders. Learn a selection of borders to create a quilt or use to complete your own patchwork project. Alternatively bring your own project along and get help in a supportive, friendly class.

Description

Experimenting with borders. Learn a selection of borders to create an Underground Railroad quilt. Alternatively bring your own project along and get help in a supportive, friendly class.

What can students expect?

To learn a variety of patchwork techniques and make a complete quilt (size and complexity according to ability) with guidance from the tutor. Individual projects will be discussed with the tutor at the first session.

Literacy, Language and Numeracy skills required

You will need to be able to understand both written and verbal information and instructions in English. The tutor will explain any technical terms for sewing and stitching used. You will also need basic numeracy to count, measure and adapt measurements.

Entry Requirements

This is an all levels course.

Assessment Method

This is a non-accredited course. You will be assessed informally by your tutor during classroom activities. There will be regular opportunities to review your progress.

Previous experience required?

This course is suitable for all levels. Beginners will be helped acquire the basics of the crafts, while individual guidance will be available to those who are consolidating their skills.

What is the progression route?

Other patchwork courses at the College, the tutor will advise.

Are there any extra costs?

Cost of all materials, threads etc for the project. You may wish to use recycled cotton fabrics, the course fee does not include the cost of materials used for this course.

Work set between sessions?

In order to fully benefit from this course, it is advisable to practise the skills learnt between sessions.

Equipment Required

Sewing kit (needles, pins and a selection of threads) and scissors, fabric scraps and notions including any buttons, beads, ribbons and lace you may have. The tutor will advise at the first session. If you need glasses for close work, please bring them to each session.

Formal teaching practical skills. Demonstrations. One to one sessions on projects, questions and answers and observation.
