Description

Learn to create simple flower arrangements. This course is suitable for those wishing to learn basic floral designs as a hobby, for a special occasion or thinking of a career in floristry. This course will cover a variety of different techniques. Flowers are not included and you will need to provide your materials at a weekly cost of approximately 15. A requirements list will be sent prior to the start of the course.

What can students expect?

At the end of this course you will be able to create a variety of different floral arrangements, using suitable materials and correct design principles. Areas of design covered include gift work, weddings, sympathy tributes. You will also learn terminology and techniques relating to floristry. You will become confident in how to arrange flowers and foliage in floral foam, attach decorations and design shapes using floral materials.

Literacy, Language and Numeracy skills required

You will need to be able to understand both written and verbal instructions and information in English and be able to measure and complete simple calculations. The tutor will explain any specialist terms used.

Assessment Method

There will be ongoing assessment throughout the course by observation and questioning and answers. Your tutor will give you regular feedback throughout the course on your progress.

Previous experience required?

None. However, an interest in floristry and floral design would be useful.

What is the progression route?

Further floristry courses with BAEC and other providers.

Are there any extra costs?

You will be required to supply your own flowers and some sundries at an approximate cost of 10-20 per week. Equipment such as scissors, containers and floral foam for fresh flowers, basket, anchor/pot tape, will also need to be purchased. A requirements list will be sent out prior to the start of the course. All materials required can be purchased from florists, Hobbycraft, supermarkets or on-line retailers.
Please bring foliage and flowers including 5 single headed flowers (rose, germini, carnations, chrysanthemums)and spray carnations, gyp etc)to week one.

Work set between sessions?

Research of each design is recommended.

Equipment Required

Please bring to the first session all items on the requirements list sent out before the start of the course as well as a pen, a note book and floristry scissors or secateurs or a sharp knife. The cost of flowers and sundries used is not included in the course fee.

Teaching method/style?

A practical, workshop style course with a mix of demonstration, 1-1 tutorials, observation and questions and answers.
