Gain a Level 1 qualification and learn the basics of bookkeeping to enhance your chances of employment in this field. You will learn the basics of manual bookkeeping then progress onto using the industry standard software, Sage 50. Course fee includes a time-limited version of Sage for home study. Upon successful completion of the assessments in class you will be awarded the Level 1 IAB Award. This course features a combination of theoretical, manual and computerised bookkeeping and is suitable for beginners to bookkeeping. Pre-course interview required. Please contact the College on 020 8659 7976 to arrange this. Please note you MUST have a PC at home in order to study between lessons.

What can students expect?

The course is broken down into four units

Introduction to bookkeeping:
Understand the job role and career path of a bookkeeper
Understand difference types of business organisations
Know the terminology used in bookkeeping

Working within bookkeeping:
Understand single-entry bookkeeping
Know the general principles of VAT
Understand what is meant by both cash and credit transactions
Understand the principles of coding and batch control
Understand how to process information in the books of prime entry (excluding the Journal)
Understand responsibilities when working in a bookkeeping environment

Banking procedures:
Understand the banking process
Understand document retention and storage requirements

Computerised accounting software
Access, enter and edit accounting information
Use tools and techniques to process business transactions
Produce accounting documents and summary reports to meet requirements

Late starters allowed?

No as this is an intensive qualification course.

Literacy, Language and Numeracy skills required

You will need to be able to understand both written and oral information and instructions in English. The tutor will explain any specialist terms used. Ability to perform simple mathematical calculations using a calculator is also necessary.

Entry Requirements

No previous experience in bookkeeping is needed. Basic IT skills needed. Not suitable for beginners to computing.

External qualification?

Yes upon succesful completion of the assessments you will gain an IAB Level 1 Level 1 Award in Computerised Accounting using Sage and an electronic Sage UK certificate, which you can print off at home.

Previous experience required?

No previous experience of Sage or bookkeeping is required. Your suitability for the course will be assessed at interview. You must have basic IT skills, eg regularly use Word or the internet and email.

What is the progression route?

IAB Level 2 Certificate in Computerised Accounting for Business available at other providers

Are there any extra costs?


Are there any set books?

Your text books will be issued during the course, and are part of the course fee.

Work set between sessions?

You should be committed to spending up to 2 hours a week on independent study and revision between sessions. You must have a PC, not a MAC, as you will be provided with a time limited version of Sage to load onto your PC. It will be essential to practise Sage on your PC between sessions. If you do not have a PC at home/work, you must be able to come into one of the centres for up to 2 hours a week to practise. You will not be considered for the course if you cannot commit to the above.

Equipment Required

Pen, pencil, notepad, calculator.

Teaching method/style?

Mixture of demonstrations, lecture, lots of time for practise, exercises and individul work both manual and at the computer.
