Learn to use a sewing machine, adapt a basic pattern and complete a simple project in this intensive workshop under the expert guidance of our tutor. Beginners will make a simple item and more experienced learners will build on their existing skills to develop more advanced techniques.
What can students expect?
To be able to thread the sewing machine and wind bobbins
To become familiar with a variety of machine stitches
To adapt a simple pattern, adding or subtracting seam allowances and scale up or down
to cut out fabric, following the pattern
To sew straight seams and reverse stitch on the sewing machine
To identify appropriate construction methods for the project, including inserting a zip and/or buttons and buttonholes
Late starters allowed?
No, this is a short intensive course and attendance is required for all three days.
Literacy, Language and Numeracy skills required
Follow verbal and written instruction. Use and understand basic English. Perform basic calculations. Use centimetres to measure length. Take notes.

Previous experience required?
No previous experience needed. Beginners will be guided to learn how to make a simple item such as a simple top or a cushion cover/tote bag etc, that include zip/buttons or pocket details. More experienced learners can complete a more advanced garment/soft furnishing item, and/or complete an existing project.

Further sewing courses and pattern cutting courses at Bromley Adult Education College.
Are there any extra costs?
Basic materials and fabric for the project are included in the course fee, you will need to bring your own threads, buttons etc if you do not want to use those supplied by the tutor. Please also bring a basic sewing kit, including fabric and paper scissors and pins. Pen and paper for taking notes.
