This non-accredited course will build a solid language foundation by consolidating and extending basic structures in everyday and tourist situations to a more competent level of communication. This course is not suitable for beginners.
What can students expect?
This course is suitable for those who have completed a College Basic Spanish course or who have basic school or holiday Spanish (equivalent to 90 to 120 hours study). The topics covered will give you greater flexibility and confidence in using the language and taking a more active part in conversations. By the end of the course, you will have sufficient vocabulary to deal with most practical situations and will be able to distinguish past, present and future events, using standard, predictable everyday language clearly and mainly accurately. You will be able to express yourself using correct grammar most of the time, when talking about routine current events, what you did, what you are going to or will do. The course will develop the skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing.

Literacy, Language and Numeracy skills required
Language and literacy skills at least equivalent to those taught in the target language. Existing basic vocabulary and grammar may be reinforced as part of language learning in target language. Numeracy skills at least equivalent to those taught in the target language, which may include bigger numbers and calculations, including money, dates and times, measurements using metric system.

This is a non-accredited course. You will be assessed informally by your tutor during classroom activities. There will be regular opportunities to review your progress.
You will complete Initial Assessment activities in the Target Language during the first session of the course, following which you will have an opportunity to discuss areas of strength and weaknesses with your tutor and agree personal targets for development.

Previous experience required?
Useable, if limited, knowledge of the language. You should be able to express yourself using basic language in common topic areas (such as likes, dislikes and interests, routine activities, the weather, descriptions of places and events, although you may not have studied all topics) and be aware of basic rules for grammar, pronunciation and intonation, even if you cannot always reproduce those successfully. NB this course is not suitable for absolute beginners. Please contact the Curriculum Development Manager for Languages if you require further information.

Lower Intermediate Spanish.
Are there any extra costs?
There may be a small additional charge for materials.This will be discussed with the tutor at the first session and will not exceed £5. You will also be required to purchase a class book and/or a dictionary.
Are there any set books?
Textbooks form part of the learning activities and homework activities, supported by supplementary materials including those available via the College's Intranet. Tutor will confirm the textbook for the course at the first session. We do not advise you to make any purchase prior to the course, but all students will be required to acquire the book recommended by the tutor by the fourth week.
Work set between sessions?
Yes, you will need to make time for homework to get the best out of this class (equivalent to roughly one to two hours per week). Home study forms an integral part of learning activities and progress will be significantly slowed down if you cannot commit to regular course work. Regular attendance is also necessary for continuing improvement of skills.

Practical, communicative activities, with the emphasis on developing all language skills including questions and answer, pair and small group practice, whole class work, with recordings and visuals, notices and short passages.
