What the course is about

<p>This intense course enables learners to gain the necessary practical skills and knowledge to provide Massage Treatments to the general public and gain employment within the Complementary Therapy Industry. With the other learners in your class, you will gain knowledge of body systems and structures, diseases and disorders of the human body. You will progress to learning how to perform a full body massage routine and local and total contra-indications to the treatment. You will study the theory of Body Massage and also the underpinning knowledge and skills required to successfully perform massage treatments. You will cover the following ITEC units:</p>

<li>383 Knowledge of Anatomy, Physiology and Pathology for Complementary Therapies</li>
<li>380 Provide Body Massage for Complementary Therapies</li>
<li>384 Principles and Practice of Complementary Therapies</li>
<li>385 Business Practice for Complementary Therapies</li>
</ul>

<p>You will be required to commit to home study in between classes as well as carrying out massage treatments on friends and family and writing up detailed therapy notes. Full details of the commitment required will be given at the admission session. As part of this course you will study the VTCT (ITEC) Level 2 Award in Infection Prevention (COVID-19) for Complementary Therapies and Sports Massage, this is a knowledge-based qualification aimed at beauty therapists and nail technicians, who need to understand the COVID-19 infection prevention methods required in order to maintain high levels of health and safety in the provision of their services to clients. A variety of learning activities will be used on this course, including tutor presentation and demonstration, practical application of skills, individual and group work, discussions, Q&A, internet research, individual research and project work. Regular home study will be necessary to successfully complete this course. You will be supported to develop good study skills.</p>

<p>Your tutor will also support you to improve your English and maths skills alongside your learning of your vocational subject. This is a course leading to a qualification, and the cost of it is subsidised by public funding. You will be required to complete all of the necessary coursework/assignments or exams by the given deadlines.</p>

Assessment of progress, tests, exams

<p>This is a Level 3 examination course. Examination dates will be given to you by your tutor at the start of the course and may fall outside the scheduled class times. Course work is also required to be completed during the course.</p>

<li><strong>Awarding body:</strong> ITEC; Level 3 Diploma in Massage</li>
<li><strong>Assignments/Course work:</strong> For Unit 380 you will need to provide written evidence of 20 treatments and 16 case studies. Units 384 & 385 are assessed by an assignment which will be set and marked by your course tutor.</li>
<li><strong>Examination(s):</strong> For Unit 383 Anatomy, Physiology and Pathology there is a multiple choice theory exam Assessment of practical massage skills is by way of a practical examination conducted by an ITEC examiner.</li>
</ul>

<p>Evidence of case studies/treatments will also need to be submitted to the examiner. You will negotiate a Personal Learning Plan with your tutor identifying the areas you need to develop; this will be reviewed at regular intervals. Please note that this qualification must be completed within the deadline set. It may be possible to re-sit the examination within the academic year at an additional fee.</p>

Who the course is for / Previous experience, knowledge or qualifications

<p>We have designed this course to support you with working in the Hair and Beauty sector. Successful completion of this course will provide the skills and knowledge required for job roles in Massage. No previous knowledge of Massage is required. The assignments for the theory units 384 and 385 will need to be written outside class time. This is a Level 3 professional qualification course for more information about the depth of study required at this level, please see the ITEC website address above.</p>

<p>English language and/or maths skills at Level 2 are required. You may be asked to complete an online assessment in English (and maths if applicable) prior to submitting a course application or as part of an admission session.</p>

Materials and costs

<p>You will need a pen and paper, and a folder for your own work and any information given. You will also need to obtain a suitable couch for providing treatments at home. Do not make any purchases prior to securing a place on the course you will be guided by the tutor prior to any purchase. In classroom sessions, learners practise on each other initially but later will be required to bring clients to sessions. A nominal charge is made to clients for each treatment and a tariff is available on request. You will need to take out a suitable student insurance policy (approximately £25). Your tutor will be able to give you details of recommended insurance companies and policies. A Tunic, oils and a set of towels will be provided for you whilst on the course in order for you to be able to practise outside the classroom at no extra cost.</p>

<p><strong>PLEASE NOTE this kit is on loan to you and must be returned at the end of the course.? If it is not returned you will be invoiced for the full cost of a replacement.</strong> A course text book is required for this course. Your course tutor will give details so that you may purchase your own copy should you wish to do so. If you would prefer to borrow a copy from Skills & Learning then you will be able to do so. It will then need to be returned at the end of your course.</p>

Next Step

<p>There are opportunities for a Massage Therapist to find employment in a variety of areas, including complementary health clinics, Primary Health Trusts, beauty salons, spas, cruise ships, hotels or resorts, or a mobile or home based own clinic. Although not required for this particular qualification, you may like to take an additional First Aid qualification course to support your professional practice as a therapist. You may wish to consider further ITEC Complementary Therapy courses such as Reflexology, Aromatherapy, Sports Massage or Indian Head Massage.</p>
