What the course is about

During this course you will build confidence in yourself and your communication skills, which can improve and support you in sustaining successful and enjoyable social and/or work relationships. This activity-based course takes place in a friendly and relaxed classroom setting, where you will be supported as you practice sharing your personal opinions and points of view.

During this course you will:

Explore what confidence means and how it can help you

Learn simple confidence and resilience building techniques and top tips

Improve how you communicate, including active listening, understanding body language and conversation skills

Practise your communication skills during fun class activities so that you can become more confident

Explore setting boundaries, decisions and choices about yourself and having the confidence to put them into practice.

Some of the skills you gain on this course could help increase your opportunities for employment or working within the community. Practice at home and completion of homework is advisable to enhance your learning experience. This course is subsidised by Government funding so you should aim to attend the whole course.

Who the course is for / Previous experience, knowledge or qualifications

This course is specifically designed for adults who have a mild to moderate learning?disability and may be particularly helpful to those who are working towards gaining independent living skills or when a qualification course is not the right option. You will need to consider the level of support you may need during the sessions as the course will have one tutor and one learning support assistant. This means that one-to-one support may be limited to ensure that everyone gets the help they need. However, we do provide a limited number of spaces so that your carer or support worker can also attend the course with you, should you require. You do not need any previous experience in the subject but should have an interest in your own potential and what life has to offer. You will need to be prepared to take an active part in the sessions and to work in a group setting.

Materials and costs

You will need a notebook, pen and A4 folder. During the first session your tutor may discuss additional materials to bring if possible.

Next Step

Following the successful completion of this course, other courses at the next levels may be offered by Skills & Learning or other local providers.
