What the course is about
During this course you will receive both group and individual support in order to help you learn more about basic pattern cutting skills.
Topics will include:</p><ul><li>Taking body measurements</li><li>Drawing up a basic straight skirt block (or waistcoat for men)</li><li>Depending on personal progress there may be time to cut the pattern in a cotton fabric and fit it on the body</li></ul><p>At the end of the course you should have a basic block that you can use to make other skirt shapes from in fabrics of your choice.
Please note - this course does not use commercial patterns and is not about adapting a commercial pattern, but you may be able to transfer some of the skills you learn to adapting commercial patterns at home in your own time.
This course can help you to cut your costs and by recycling and renewing, make the most of your existing wardrobe and furnishings, contributing to a greener environment and helping you financially.
All our courses are made up of elements of speaking & listening, reading and writing, and you will work using these elements throughout the course.
Some of the skills you gain on this course could help increase your opportunities for employment or working within the community. Learning takes place in a friendly classroom setting, which is a great place for social interaction and helping you meet new people.
Practice at home and completion of homework is advisable to enhance your learning experience.
This course is subsidised by Government funding so you should aim to attend the whole course.

There is no qualification or examination attached to this course.
Who the course is for / Previous experience, knowledge or qualifications
This is a beginner's course, and you will be expected to have no experience in the subject, or very basic knowledge of the subject including some memory of the subject from school.
Materials and costs
Please bring with you to the first lesson:</p><ul><li>Drawing kit – rubber, pencil, sharpener, pens</li><li> Notepad </li><li>Paper scissors and fabric scissors</li><li>Pins and basic sewing kit (needles and thread) </li><li>Sewing tape measure (not builders)</li><li> Any set square or ruler you may have</li><li<b>Sewing machine – for the second week only</b></li></ul><p><b>You will need to bring your own sewing machine to the second week as this will help you understand how it works and enable you to successfully continue sewing at home. Please ensure it is in safe, good working condition and bring your user manual.</b>
Before buying expensive materials and equipment please discuss their purchase with your tutor. You will be expected to purchase your own materials as the course progresses.
This course does not use a sewing machine and is not for machine embroidery.
Following the successful completion of this course, other courses at the next levels may be offered by Skills & Learning or other local providers.

<br><b>Attendance:</b> before enrolling you should ensure that you can attend all classes offered as far as possible
<br><b>Places on courses:</b> some of our courses will be in high demand and if you have been offered a place but no longer require it, please advise us immediately as you may be preventing another learner from the taking the place. Where learners do not attend the first session, without having given prior notice, Skills & Learning reserve the right to offer the place on the course to another learner and you will not be eligible to a refund it its outside of the terms outlined in our cancellation policy.
<br><b>Fully funded learners:</b> if you have been offered a fully funded place on a course and no longer require it, you must advise us before the course starts so that your place can be offered to someone else. We reserve the right to withdraw future offers of fully funded places if you regularly do not start or complete funded courses.
<br><b>Home study:</b> you may be required to do some study at home between sessions to assist with your learning and progress.
<br><b>Qualification Levels:</b> there is further information about qualification levels on our website. Some courses will have learners of different levels being taught in the same class with differentiated learning materials and activities appropriate to the qualification level.
<br><b>Proof of identity:</b> please bring photographic ID and your National Insurance number with you to your first session. You will also need to provide it for any external examinations you take.
<br><b>Off-site activities:</b> with some courses, there may be the opportunity for off-site enrichment activities at additional cost, for example: gallery, museum or exhibition visits. Where this is an integral part of the course, your tutor will discuss the arrangements with you during your induction.
<br><b>Parking at Centres:</b> parking at centres may be limited, please be prepared to use on street parking or pay and display car parks.
