What the course is about

During this course you will receive both group and individual support in order to help you learn more about Sewing Machine Skills.

This fascinating course follows on from Step 2 (or equivalent) and will help you consolidate your learning at beginners' level.

Topics that may be covered include:</p><ul><li>Use pressing techniques to achieve a quality finish to sewn items</li><li>Use a greater variety of the machine stitches</li><li>Use sewing techniques for embroidery and decorative purposes</li><li>Make a sewn craft item following instructions in the style of commercial patterns</li><li>Choose a greater range of fabrics suitable for beginner projects</li><li>Use a variety of techniques such as buttonholes and zips in your projects</li><li>Learn how to read, cut out from and follow a commercial sewing pattern</li><li>Explore the different natures of fabrics and their purposes</li><li>Look at the work of some fashion designers today and trends.</li></ul><p>There will be the opportunity to choose a practical project to be completed from the selection offered by the tutor. Projects are chosen to give you the chance to put into practice the skills and knowledge that you will be taught.

You will have the option to adapt choices made to suit your ability and any opportunity you may have to carry out additional work on your project.

This course can help you to cut your costs and by recycling and renewing, make the most of your existing wardrobe and furnishings making a contribution to a greener environment and helping you financially.

All our courses are made up of elements of speaking & listening, reading and writing, and you will work using these elements throughout the course.

Some of the skills you gain on this course could help increase your opportunities for employment or working within the community. Learning takes place in a friendly classroom setting, which is a great place for social interaction and helping you meet new people.

Practice at home and completion of homework is advisable to enhance your learning experience.

This course is subsidised by Government funding so you should aim to attend the whole course.

Assessment of progress, tests, exams

Your tutor will work with you to develop a Personal Development Plan (PDP) which will help you review your progress towards achieving your goals during the course.

There is no qualification or examination attached to this course.

Who the course is for / Previous experience, knowledge or qualifications

This is a Beginners Step 3 course, and you will be expected to have an increased basic knowledge and confidence in the subject and feel happy working more independently. You should be keen to expand the breadth and depth of your skills.

Materials and costs

<b>You will need to bring your own sewing machine as this will help you understand how it works and enable you to successfully continue sewing at home. Please ensure it is in safe, good working condition and bring your user manual.</b>

You will need a basic sewing kit. Advice about appropriate choices will be given during the first session.

Before buying expensive materials and equipment please discuss their purchase with your tutor. You will be expected to purchase your own materials as the course progresses.

You will need to provide the materials for the project item that you choose to make.

You will need a notebook, pen and A4 folder.

During the first session your tutor may discuss additional materials to bring if possible.

<br><b>Fully funded learners:</b> if you have been offered a fully funded place on a course and no longer require it, you must advise us before the course starts so that your place can be offered to someone else. We reserve the right to withdraw future offers of fully funded places if you regularly do not start or complete funded courses.
<br><b>Home study:</b> you may be required to do some study at home between sessions to assist with your learning and progress.
<br><b>Qualification Levels:</b> there is further information about qualification levels on our website. Some courses will have learners of different levels being taught in the same class with differentiated learning materials and activities appropriate to the qualification level.
<br><b>Proof of identity:</b> please bring photographic ID and your National Insurance number with you to your first session. You will also need to provide it for any external examinations you take.
<br><b>Off-site activities:</b> with some courses, there may be the opportunity for off-site enrichment activities at additional cost, for example: gallery, museum or exhibition visits. Where this is an integral part of the course, your tutor will discuss the arrangements with you during your induction.
