What the course is about
This course is not suitable for beginners and those more experienced, as this can be thought of as a project that will be started and finished in one day.
During this course you will receive both group and individual support in experimenting with PMC, silver clay, as a medium from which to make a piece of unique and delightful jewellery.
Art Clay Silver is a precious metal clay which looks and feels like ordinary sculpting or porcelain clay, with fine particles of pure silver mixed with a non-toxic organic binder. When fired the binder burns out leaving a fine silver piece, which can be hallmarked as fine silver.
Using pre-formed moulds, or creating your own textures, directly onto the silver clay, using cutters, you will learn how to create your own design jewellery,a pendant with embellishment and integral bail.
The various stages will include some or all of the following:

Creating texture – using texture mats or other templates that we will explore.

Selecting a pre-formed mould

Practice with air drying clay to check the design

Using PMC, (silver) to make the item – creation of embellishment(s) and adding a bai

Inclusion of a lab created gemstone - (optional and will incur a charge at cost)

Setting the clay

Refining the clay

Drying the piece before

Firing

Polishing

Burnishing

Patinising (optional)

Fitting with jump rings, chain/thong/earring connections

All our courses are made up of elements of speaking & listening, reading and writing, and you will work using these elements throughout the course.
Some of the skills you gain on this course could help increase your opportunities for employment or working within the community. Learning takes place in a friendly classroom setting, which is a great place for social interaction and helping you meet new people.
This course is subsidised by Government funding so you should aim to attend the whole course

Who the course is for / Previous experience, knowledge or qualifications
This course is for anyone who wishes to spend a pleasant day, creating something beautiful. The sheer delight of seeing the silver clay go from mucky clay to shiny silver is like a mini miracle every time and designing your own jewellery is an absorbing and fun pastime.
No prior knowledge is necessary, but you will get your fingers messy!
Materials and costs
You will need to purchase 15 grams of PMC Flex fine silver clay, which will cost you between £33.50 and £37.50, don’t assume that you will always get it cheaper at the most accessible retailer, but bear in mind the postage costs. Please ensure that you specifically buy the Flex PMC. This is available at Amazon, PMC shop, Cookson Gold. There are other retailers that sell it and I am not endorsing any retailer over another, but I have had good experiences with being supplied by the three mentioned. (There is a fab online shop for metal clay in Wareham, who are brilliant, but at this time, they are not stocking the PMC Flex.)
This will give you enough for a chunky pendant, with integral bail and a pair of earrings, or charms – or a necklace with more than one element, or two not so chunky pendants.
All equipment will be provided. Please bear in mind for safety reasons, please do not wear long draped sleeves, or anything with a bow at the neck and your hair must be tied up if is long. All of this to maintain safety when firing and sintering the clay. No open toed shoes, molten silver landing on your bare feet would not be a pleasant experience! (It hasn’t happened yet, but I wouldn’t like to risk it.)
