This specialist full day masterclass will introduce you to Sashiko. This simple but beautiful form of Japanese embroidery has become very popular over the last few years and during the day you will learn about its ancient origins and how to produce stunning practical results.

What the course is about

This amazing Masterclass will introduce you to Sashiko embroidery and help you understand everything you will need to know to about this ancient technique which is currently enjoying a global revival.

During the workshop you will ;

• Learn about the origins and history of Sashiko and how important it is historically in Japanese culture.

• Explore and create your own patterns based on the Sashiko designs.

• Learn and practice the stitching techniques to produce beautiful results.

• You will have the opportunity to create a cushion cover or a basic tote bag.

This course offers an avenue for creative pursuits, improving your health, confidence and well being.

This course is subsidised by Government funding so you should aim to attend the whole workshop.

Who the course is for / Previous experience, knowledge or qualifications

This course is for complete beginners or for those who want to refresh their skills in Sashiko.

You will require basic sewing and sewing machine skills.

There are no entry requirements for this course. You may enrol online at, in person at a centre, or call 01202 262300.

Assessment of progress, tests, exams

The workshop is structured in a way that gives you the opportunity to try out the relevant techniques. Your tutor will then work with you to decide which aspects you personally want to develop further as part of a final piece.

There is no qualification or examination attached to this course.

Materials and costs

You will be provided with all the necessary fabrics, threads and notions that will be used. However, if you have any particular fabrics and threads that you would like to incorporate please feel free to bring these.

Please bring a basic sewing kit and you will need to bring your sewing machine in order to make up the final piece. Your machine should be in good working order and it is helpful to bring the user guide if you have it. If you do not have a machine there are a couple available for shared usage.

You may find it useful to bring a notebook and pen.

You will need to bring a packed lunch. Tea and coffee will be provided.
