Course description

The Level 2 food safety course is essential for all food handlers.
It provides key information that will ensure food handlers know the correct methods and principles of food handling, understand their legal requirement and can keep the consumer safe.
This course is suitable for those working or looking to work in the catering industry.

Course outcomes

By the end of the course you will be able to:

Identify the importance of food safety procedures, safe food handling and avoiding unsafe behaviour
Understand the importance of food handlers keeping themselves clean and hygienic
Know how to keep the work area and equipment clean and tidy, by following procedures relating to cleaning methods, safe use of chemicals, storage of cleaning chemicals
Know the importance of safe waste disposal
Identify the importance of pest control
Identify main risks to food safety from contamination and cross-contamination from microbial, chemical, physical and allergenic hazards
Identify safe food handling and temperature control practices for preparing, cooking, chilling, reheating, holding, serving and transporting food
Know how to deal with food spoilage including recognition and reporting

Is this course suitable for me?

This qualification is aimed at individuals who are, or intend to be, food handlers working in catering. No previous experience is required but this course does require a minimum of Level 1 English (or equivalent).

What do I need to bring?

All materials will be supplied but a pen and paper is advisable.

How will I learn?

You will attend a group session and experience tutor demonstration and carry out some verbal and written exercises.

How will my progress be monitored and assessed?

Progress is monitored by practical work and by tutor observation, and there is a 20 question multiple choice exam taken at the end of the day.

HABC Level 2 Award in Food Safety for Catering.
