Learn how to create effective colour studies of the urban life around you using just line and watercolour and produce exciting and engaging sketchbooks or travel journals. <span style="font-weight: bold;">This course will take place at Stoke Lodge.</span>

What can students expect?

Learn to capture the people and places around you effectively using just line and watercolour. Various aspects of urban sketching will be explored from how to tell a visual story through annotated drawings, the use of colour and tone to give mood and depicting architecture and people. Effective methods of creating an engaging image will be explored through demonstrations followed by exercises, allowing you to try for yourself. Case studies into contemporary artists will be discussed along with the many opportunities of joining in with the global networks of artists and enthusiasts via Urbansketchers.org.&nbsp;<span style="font-weight: bold;">This course will take place at Stoke Lodge.</span>

What should students bring?

• Cotman watercolours, affordable good quality and consistent colours in either pans or tubes depending upon your own preference. The demonstrations and exercises will use the follow colours throughout:

*Lemon Yellow hue
*Cadmium Yellow hue
*Cadmium Red hue
*Permanent Rose
*Cerulean Blue hue
*Raw Sienna
*Burnt sienna

• Suitable watercolour brushes for A4 scale work.
(Pro Arte Polar White Nylon brushes are excellent value, three brushes from the range e.g size 4, 8 and 10)
• Derwent water soluble sketching pencils -
Please note standard grey water-soluble graphite, not any of the other many tinted graphite pencils they offer. Available in tins of six with two each of HB 4B and 8B.
• 30 cm clear plastic ruler
• A4 cartridge paper pad, 300 GSM in weight will not cockle when we apply washes of colour.
• Putty rubber
• Pencil sharpener
• Water pot, squat in shape to avoid spillage!
