Description

For beginners and experienced students looking to explore the medium further. Students will work on individual projects and will develop confidence and ability throughout the term.
This course will be delivered at Stoke Lodge but will move online if necessary using ZOOM and WhatsApp.

What can students expect?

‘On the job’ learning. If you are new to oils you will learn to mix and apply oil colours and explore oil painting techniques and materials. You will start with a very simple still life. Improvers will be encouraged to set their own projects and extend their technical repertoire. This course will be delivered at Stoke Lodge but will move online if necessary using ZOOM and WhatsApp.

Late starters allowed?

Yes, but this is a short course, so it is best to join by week 2.

Previous experience required?

No. Whatever your starting point the course aims to facilitate improvement and extend ability and confidence.

What is the progression route?

Learners progress at their own pace - this continues from one term to the next.

Are there any extra costs?

Occasional model fee (optional).

What should students bring?

For the first session please bring;
• Paint (don’t buy very cheap) Daler or Windor and Newton student quality oils-a
selection including reds blues yellows raw or burnt umber and white
• Brushes (bristle, not nylon) a selection of round and flat in various sizes incl some large size
• Palette. Must be flat. Either tear- off pad or wooden traditional or a large smooth bathroom tile.
• Palette knife (metal, triangular blade)
• Canvas - stretched, board or pad (don’t buy super cheap)
• Turps
• Cotton rags
• Kitchen roll
• Baby wipes
• Glass jar with screw top
• Liquin (‘fine detail’ if possible)
• Masking tape
• An apron or old shirt to protect your clothes
• Paper clips or bulldog clips
Stable internet connection, a tablet or PC and ability to use ZOOM and WhatsApp if the course moves online.

Teaching method/style?

Beginners will be shown the step by step process and then make their own painting.
Improvers will be encouraged to talk about the direction of their work and work towards their goals.
An iPad is great if you have one - you can create albums of other artists’ work that you admire and collect images from the internet.
