Continue learning. Build on each previous term with more bidding techniques for different hand types. Discover bidding sequences for weak and strong hands and perhaps a convention or two. Improve your card play techniques and get lots of practice.

What can students expect?

Learn how to play Bridge - a card game for four players. The game of Bridge involves both “bidding” and card play. You will learn these aspects gradually in a relaxed, friendly class. This course is for complete beginners with no previous knowledge of the game.

After an explanation of each aspect, you will practise playing to use the theory. Play requires groups of four people so some sharing and turn taking may be necessary for practice play. You will partner another class member for card play. There will be lots of practical tasks and quizzes to help you to learn by working in pairs and small groups. You will be learning a Bridge “system” called Standard English ACOL which is the most popular system played in the UK.

This fascinating game will keep your mind active and provide hours of enjoyment. There is no need to be a maths or memory expert. Bridge is played at many levels and social players enjoy it as much as experts.

This course is for complete beginners. The first year (3 terms) includes these topics:

1. Card play and the principles of Bridge
2. Understanding bridge terms
3. Hand evaluation
4. 1 No Trump opening bid
5. 1 of a suit opening bid
6. Responding to partner’s opening bid
7. Opener’s rebid
8. Responders 2nd bid
9. Opponents bidding (overcalls and doubles)
10. Weak (2 and 3 level) opening bids
11. Strong Opening bids
12. Popular conventions (Blackwood and Stayman)

The first course starts in September. Completion of all three terms is recommended to build up your knowledge of playing and bidding. Term 2 starts in January and Term 3 is from April
