What is this course about?

This course is for advanced level ESOL learners to focus on improving their written, reading and oral skills. If you have passed Level 1 or are emerging L2 this is for you.This course is also a bridging course from ESOL to Functional Skills English.

Who is this course for?

You need to be aged 19 or over by the 31st of August 2020.
And be eligible for publicly funded ESOL courses.

Are there any entry requirements?

Yes, you will either need to
• complete a Level 2 assessment
• or have Level 1 qualifications including reading / writing / speaking and listening.
The class tutor may have an informal discussion with you to ensure this is the right class for you.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

if you have a Level one ESOL qualification pass you will not need to have an interview before you enrol, otherwise you will be required to do a BKSB online initial assessment.

How will I be taught?

You will be taught either face to face or via the Edmodo app to access the ESOL classroom – where you will be taught using a range of methods including:
Whole class – teacher delivery or on MS Teams or Edmodo
Independent assignments and homework
Small group work
Video, You Tube and other media
Quizzes and assessment

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. Your tutor will give you verbal feedback as a group during the session, and written feedback on activities and work that you do.
You will decide individual learning goals with your tutor and see your progress over the term by keeping an online folder of work.
You will receive a HALS certificate of attendance and achievement upon successful completion of this course.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

You will be able to talk to your tutor in one to one meetings about your learning. Your tutor will ask for your feedback as a group at different times over the course and you will also contribute to the course review. You will be able to formally record your views on the course at the end by completing an evaluation form. You may also complete GLA & OFSTED surveys.
Other ways to give feedback include via your class representatives elected in class, through the online platform, the Edmodo App.

What course can I do next?

Progression: depending on the progress you make on the course you will be advised on the best suitable course for your needs and level.

Additional information

It is very important for you to attend either your class regularly either face to face, on Teams or via Edmodo. If you are unable to attend a class, please notify your tutor. If you do not attend classes during your first week or fail to attend for three consecutive classes on the course without informing your tutor, you may lose your place of study.

Assessment Method

There will be regular on course assessment by both the tutor and your peers.
There will also be formal online diagnostic & formative assessments. It is important that you complete homework on time.
Your homework will be assessed and the tutor will give you either written or verbal feedback to support your progress.
Other pedagogical tools used include peer and self-assessments.

Equipment Required

Pencil, pens, dictionary and folder. You may be required to access a computer with internet access for independent learning at home or in the library, OLC (Open Learning Centre), during some classes and log on to the Edmodo App.
