What the course is about

This qualification forms part of the TAQA (Training, Assessment, Quality Assurance) suite of qualifications. It is suitable for people working in or looking to enter roles in assessment, and replaces the Assessor and Verifier (A&V) Units. The qualification provides people who carry out assessment in their organisation with the opportunity to develop and improve their practice as well as achieving a professional qualification for the role. They are available to anyone working in accredited learning or non accredited learning (where people may assess performance but do not assess for a qualification).

The qualification includes the following units:

301 Understanding the Principles and Practices of Assessment

302 Assess Occupational Competence in the Work Environment

303 Assessing Vocational Skills Knowledge and Understanding

Unit 301 is a knowledge based unit and is completed by studying an e-learning package. Following this, you will complete a written assignment and professional discussion to evidence your understanding of all the learning outcomes for this unit. The evidence for Units 302 and 303 will come primarily from an observation of a candidate assessor assessing two learners on two occasions in a work environment. Each assessment will cover all stages from planning to feedback and updating records. Overall the candidate assessor must show that they have covered a minimum of three assessment methods from the seven in this unit. The learner will be allocated 8 hours of assessment time to evidence their competence in assessing learners using the listed assessment methods.

You will be required to attend 3 workshops - dates to be confirmed according to your availability - and additional one to one meetings with your assessor, as required. A variety of learning activities will be used on this course, including tutor presentation and demonstration, practical application of skills, individual and group work, discussions, Q&A, internet research, individual research and project work. Where relevant, your learning will enable you to develop skills and knowledge required for work. There may be vocational specialist guest speakers, or employers, invited to share their skills and experience.

Regular home study will be necessary to successfully complete this course. You will be supported to develop good study skills. Your tutor will also support you to improve your English and maths skills alongside your learning of your vocational subject. This will include assessing your current skills and planning learning activities related to your subject that are designed to develop your skills in these areas. To support this, you will undertake some e-learning modules, where appropriate, as homework. There may be the opportunity to undertake a work placement during your course. Full details will be shared at induction. If you have declared at enrolment that you are unemployed, you will be invited to meet with our Learning Adviser, or a Work Coach, to identify other learning and work placement opportunities that will support you to secure employment or improve your employment prospects. We highly recommend that you engage fully in any other learning opportunities that we help you identify.

This is a vocational course leading to a qualification, and the cost of it is subsidised by public funding. You will be required to complete all of the necessary coursework/assignments or exams by the given deadlines. Please note: if you do not successfully complete the course within this academic year, you will not be able to repeat it at the subsidised fee.
